Docu-drama is fifth Gabriel Award for Journey Films

ALBERT SCHWEITZER: Called to Africa, winner of the 2008 Gabriel Award for national television release in religion and a 2009 Telly Award for religion / TV, is now available for home video on DVD.

The film, produced by Journey Films in association with Lightworks Producing Group, tells the compelling story of a theologian, musician and philosopher who abandoned a life of fame and comfort in Europe at the age of 30 to dedicate his life to the medical care of Africans. Ultimately he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace and became one of the most celebrated figures of the 20th century. The price Schweitzer and his family paid was enormous. And his achievements are manifest in the Schweitzer Hospital that today continues to provide magnificent service to the people of West Africa.

Jeff McCarthy and Anne Torsiglieri portray the Schweitzers.

Filmmaker Martin Doblmeier of Journey Films noted, “Today we hear too many stories of evil acts performed out of a misguided understanding of religion and the will of God.  But in Schweitzer, here is a man whose faith led him to abandon fame and venture to a remote part of Africa. Through the sheer force of his personality and his everyday mercies he transformed for the better that corner of Africa.  And in so doing he inspired a world.  These are the kinds of stories we believe need to be heard again and again.”

ALBERT SCHWEITZER: Called to Africa was written and directed by Martin Doblmeier (BONHOEFFER and The POWER of FORGIVENESS) and produced and edited by Adele Schmidt. It was produced for Faith & Values Media and distributed to PBS stations by American Public Television. To purchase the DVD click here.
